ked a whole ox.The first story is occupied by five rooms. Therooms are long and very narrow, with talc insteadof glass in the windows; hence they are ratherdark. The first room was the family chapel, which,however, was only used on great festivals. Hereare some ancient icons and crosses, and in casesround the room are various articles belonging toPhilarett and Michael Romanoff. Next to thiswas the oratory, which was used daily for familyprayer. In the living-rooms are preserved a col-lection of historical articles—seals, combs, clothing,sticks, Michaels sceptre, sword, etc. Then come twosmall rooms for the children, one the boys room,and the other for the girls. The bedroom andladies apartments are in the wooden Terem, andhere is a fair collection of ladies garments, looking-glasses, etc. All the furniture and objects shownare strictly historical, but the building itself hasbeen much restored, though the renovations havebeen made with care, to fit in with the spirit of theold house.

However, a noble of higherrank would not demean himself by bowing toanother of inferior birth to himself. Old NikitaRomanoff, however, made up his mind that every-body should bow who came to see him, and care-fully had the door into his study made less thanfive feet high, so that it was impossible to enter hispresence except in a bowing attitude, or by fallingon ones knees. In either case the old gentlemanspride of race was gratified. Tradition says that Michael Romanoff, the firstof the present Russian dynasty, was born in thisquaint little old house on the Varvarka; but thequestion has, I believe, never been decided.Anyhow, this is quite one of the most interestingbuildings in Moscow, and is so small that one cansee it thoroughly in less than half an hour. Inanother street just off the Kremlin, the Nikolskaia,or Street of St. Nicholas, is a handsome struct
